A Few New Things

Fall is definitely here, and we have some seasonal pieces and some new things for your home year-round use.

2011 Red and Green ...and other stuff

May I have a drum roll please...................................

PREsenting the one, the only 2011 Good Wives Co. Red and Green Quilt

I can't believe it's done! Okay, I still have to quilt it, but..it's done!

Those of you who have been working on this and waiting for the third installment, it's ready. Call the shop, stop by or check your mail. Sorry it took so long for this last part, but those little leaves were a bit of a challenge! And I did design an easier vine around the center applique, so you don't have to pull out your hair--but I'd rather not be bald alone.

If you'd like to join the insanity, we do have some additional kits available, but remember these are limited and won't be available after the end of the year.

Just an aside here. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with this quilt top. If I never made another quilt top, I'd still be happy. I really love this one.

Now, what else is new, you ask. Well........

Cindy is working on a new flying geese quilt--I can't wait to see it.

There is a puzzle ball pincushion bigger than your head! I'll post a picture after I go to work on Wednesday.

Already working on the 2012 Valentine Quilt--should have a picture and some sample blocks in the shop by Wednesday. For those of you who like rubber stamps, this one's for you. No, it's not another hexagon.

Classes coming up:

Wed, Oct 12, from 1-3: Hour glass ruler by Deb Tucker. The woman is a genius. The class is free with a small materials fee. You don't have to buy the ruler until you decide you like it. Hands on class. We've got sewing machines. Bring your rotary cutting supplies.

Wed. Oct 19 from 10-12 and 1-3. Rapid fire LeMoyne ruler by Deb Tucker. Yes, another ruler. Yes, you can machine piece practically perfect in every way LeMoyne stars (those are those stars made out of 8 diamonds all meeting in the center). You've got to try it to believe it. Same as above--free class with small materials fee and you don't have to buy the ruler until you decide you like it. And it's hands on, bring your rotary cutting supplies.

I (the other linda) will be out of the shop for about 4 weeks starting Oct 21--getting a new knee.

I'll still try to keep you posted here about the new things that are happening at the shop. If things sound a little fuzzy, it'll be because I'll have a fuzzy head, so if you have any questions, call the shop.

Come on in and take a look around. We still have some darling fall decorating hand made dolls, and other fun fall deco stuff, like hooked pillows, adorable carved "keep forever" jack-o-lanterns, wreaths, and lots of other stuff.

We've been living life this summer instead of blogging about it, so it's time to get back in the swing of things.
The other Linda went to NQA this summer and got bitten by the embroidery bug. Not only have I been working on a quilt project, but I've been designing some stuff for all of you. It's very addictive. It's also simple, which is why I do it!

We had a local dyer come into the shop the other day and we loaded up on overdyed wools for your applique and hooking pleasure. We can also get more of these while she has them, so come in soon if you need a big chunk. ( I picked up a piece of the tan and cream stripe--it just looked like it needed something--to be mine!)

Linda, Cindy and Mel also got a few new items for home decor:

Our wonderfully talented doll lady, Pam Baungardtner, brought in these two wonderful little punkin' dolls--they're waiting for you to come pick them up!

We have a good stock of patterns to make these pumpkiny pillow pals, if you'd rather make your holiday friends yourself.

And last but not least, if you're a fan of Judy Condon's country decor books, her newest one, The Joy of Country, came in this week. It's filled with ideas on country decorating with a primitive look. Great eye candy even if you're not up for doing anything right now.

Linda, Mel and the other Linda are also working on a new baby quilt repro--this time with applique trees. We're all using the same pattern, but they're all with different fabrics, and all look different. Check back soon, cause I hope to have a good picture here soon.

Now, go find yourself a good football game to watch and pretend you care, while you stitch to your heart's content.

Hadn't realized we hadn't posted anything for so long. So sorry. It just means we've been terribly busy. Now that Summer is here (what happened to spring? oh, yeah, it rained.) we're rapidly getting ready for the Summer Shop Spree. If you haven't gotten your passport, stop by and get it from us and be eligible for a $100 GC from Good Wives Co, and you'll get an additional free pattern.

In addition to the patterns included in the passport packet and our free one, we've got at least 4 other new things we've been developing just for summer. Trust me, you can't wait!

New Stuff At GWC!

Summer is FINALLLLLY here (atleast we hope!), Good Wives has gotten tons of new things for you to help decorate your garden with! From water cans, puddlers, bee skeeps, floral frogs, and angel plaques. We have it all!

These cute little red, white and blue bird houses will also be wonderful in your gardens. They were esclusively made at GWC and the birdies will love to live in them!

As most of you know, we kicked off the Shop Hop this past Saturday with Super Saturday. The theme this year was celebrate Ohio, so we made this awesome Ohio flag for all of you, one in our primitive fabric and the little one is made out of wool! We also have the frames for sale for each of these! And yes we do have kits made up for both this wonderful projects :)

Spring Spree! Whee!

Tomorrow, Saturday, is the Spring Spree as the kick off function of the 2011 Central Ohio Shop Hop. We'll be selling passports for the July Shop Hop, and if you buy them from us, you'll be entered in a drawing for a $100 GC for Good Wives and receive a free pattern. If you buy a passport tomorrow, you'll get 20% off any fabric purchase tomorrow. Non passport people get a 15% discount off of fabric.
We have kits done up for our shop hop project and a couple of other surprises. Our project:

This one is done in wool and is now framed, and we also have one that's done in cotton prints and is bigger--it's framed over the fireplace!
Mel lost her mind and has worked on :

It's done out of 1/2" hexagons. Still needs a surround border. And as in lots of "things Mel", I've got the bug and have paper pieces cut out in the 1/4" size and I'll see what the weekend brings.
Linda finished an Amish Churn Dash quilt and it's in the shop, and there are several Lori Smith small "Fit To Frame"' s done up, with lots of patterns in stock. Annnndddd, Cindy is almost done with her antique repro of a blue and pink quilt.
I'm hoping to have the pattern for the center of the 2011 red and green quilt in the shop this week or next. Tore my knee cartilage, so everything is iffy.
We've gotten lots of new fabrics in. Lots of them are just to die for and I can't decide on which ones I can't live without!
Be sure and stop by and see all the new stuff--just visit if you want! It'll stop raining soon. Right? And it's too soggy to mow in the rain, so come in and get some eye candy!

Doll Quilt Group and Current projects

The first meeting of the Doll Quilt Group was so much fun, we're adding another session. In addition to the one that meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, we'll now have a second one on the 4th Wednesday of the month. We're even plan on moving the class to the wool room, so we have more space. The Wed group is full, but if you'd like to come to the 4th Wed group, call soon and save your place. We did one of the quilts from Kathleen Tracy's Civil War Sewing Circle, and the next one is from there, also. We picked the fabric for the kits this last Wednesday, and the pink we used is allll gone, so, the ones we have, are the ones we have. Enough for a total of 12 people. There will also be a small surprise free kit-let from me. If you have the book, you're all set. If not, we received another batch, but they seem to be going like wildfire. The distributor hardly had any left of the new batch they got from the printer! Cost for each meeting is only $5 plus the cost of the kit.

Cindy caught Mel's addiction with this hexagon antique and now she's working on one, too. Her machine project is coming along nicely, and we'll have a few kits for this one:

Jean came back from the south, which she said wasn't all that warm, and jumped right in and did this doll quilt from the Kathleen Tracy book. If you think we all fell in love with this little book, you're right.

And because Jean is the most efficient of us all, it's already all kitted at the shop. We've been busy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The good news is that the weather is getting closer to when the snow will stop, and you'll be able to travel without fear of slipping and sliding. The bad news is on an industry level. While we've tried very hard to keep our prices down, and not raise our prices every time a single company hits us with a price increase, we hear from the reps that they wouldn't be surpised to see prices rising to $15/yard by the end of the year due to a baaaaddddd cotton crop and fewer farmers growing cotton. We're going to do our best ot help everybody through this. We're getting more solids in (slowly, but give us a chance), as they're less expensive than the prints and homespuns. We're encouraging everybody to save a scrap from a project that can give you at least a 1 1/2" square from it, and we'll help you find the projects that they'll work with. Yes, we're a business, but we're also consumers. We like to buy fabric, too. And we'd like to continue to see you through all this. Bring in your scraps to match with a main color or background. We love color and fabric challenges!

Let us know what kind of classes you'd like. We can schedule all kinds of things, but if they're not what you want, it doesn't matter how many we offer. Do you like technique classes? projects to be finished in class? idea sharing? Let us know.

And if nothing else, make sure we have your email address so you hear all about our sales--(yes, we will continue to have them :) !)

Doll Quilts!

We all fell in love with the little quilts in Kathleen Tracy's Civil War Sewing Circle. Jacqueline made the Hexagon one seen in one of the previous posts. Now I've made this one from the same book:

I still have to quilt it, and that just wasn't in the cards this week. And some of you are saying that you don't have anyone to make a doll quilt for (ain't that good English?). I don't either, but I love

a)feeling accomplished

b)trying out new projects

c)playing with fabrics and colors that I wouldn't or couldn't use for a big quilt.

So, I hang them on a wall in my dining room:

There's still some room left, and when it's full, I'll move into another room. And, besides, I'm making them for me.

We're having so much fun with this, we're starting a Doll Group on the third Wednesday of each month. The one I showed you above is the first one in the series. It'll only be $5/mo plus supplies each month, and after the first one, you'll have input into the ones we do in the future. So, come see us from 1:30 to 3:30 on Wed. the 16th. Bring your machine and basic sewing supplies. We'll have fabric. If you already have the book, you'll be all set. You can join this group any time. The only thing is, we'll need to know you're coming, as we're limited on spaces. Call early and reserve your space. We'll be trying all sorts of new things: trying out new tools, talking about magazines and books, taking a shot at design, playing with color, giving input into what you'd like the see us get in or do................phew. And lots more. Hope to see you there. I' ll pretend to be running the show, and if nothing else, I'm good for a laugh.

Red and Green 2011 News

For those of you who hate mystery quilts or are just curious, we'll have a picture of our Red and Green 2011 quilt in the shop from Wed. on. We can't put the photo on line, as it's not ours, and we can't take a picture of ours, cause it's not done yet. There is another option. If you have the September/October 2006 issue of Fon's and Porter's Love of Quilting magazine, you'll find the picture on page 16. If you decide you want to do it but want a little hand holding, or just some company along the way, stop in on any Wednesday, and the other Linda will be happy to help you. (Honest, I'll really be happy to do it!)

I'd have more pictures if I had a brain, but I was so intent on working up new projects for Spriing, that I had a "Barbie bubble" and forgot. Wanted to let you know that Cindy has been hard at work on the "Soldier's Cot Quilt" in Kathleen Tracy's Civil War Sewing Circle book. I'll post a picture as soon as she finishes the border! There is a good bit of additional information about cot quilts from the civil war. If this interests you, be sure to check out material about the Civil War Sanitary Commission.
Jacqueline has the top finished for the Grandmother's Flower Garden doll quilt, from the same book, finished. She did a lovely job with the applique, and this is her first applique project!

We also got kits cut for the concentric squares in both pastel and a patriotic red, white and blue--Memorial Day will be here befoe you know it, closely followed by ........

Spring is Just Around The Corner?

Candy Hearts and Red & Green

Except for the binding which Mel & Linda are working on today, the Candy Hearts Quilt is done.

The kits are cut, and the patterns should be ready later today. Yippee! I'll tell you a little secret --Linda thinks she put the wrong backing fabric on it, and we looked at it yesterday and decided that the centers of the hearts would be a great place to embroider those sayings from the Valentine candy hearts, or things about a new baby! Hindsite is 20/20.

Check out what Angie Martin brought in for show and tell yesterday:

She needed a large tote that she could put lots of things in as she went about her job of loyal Mail Carrier. (In this weather, you've got to be loyal or you wouldn't show up!) And look at those straps! You know how hand made straps are usually too puffy or too winpy or too stiff? Angie solved the problem by covering a pre-made webbing strap with her own fabric and doing this killer embroidery on it!

We also got in a new book from Kathleen Tracy--the lady that did Remembering Adelia---called The Civil War Sewing Circle. Come in and check it out! I know you're all are waiting for the sale to start Saturday, but you might want to pick up the book and plan a project from it and get the fabric on sale, and pick up a Candy Heart kit before they're all gone. I don't think we'll be cutting that puppy again.

We've also been hard at work getting the first part of our Red and Green Mystery Quilt, for the second edition of our Red and Green quilt, done. (My grammer is getting better and better--not.) Here's a picture of part one:

We hope to have

Part 1 kitted up by early February, then have Part 2 by the end of May, then Part 3 over the summer, so you'll have plenty of time to get it done! Just so you know, there will be 12 blocks of part 1--yes, all like this, part 2 is a center medallion applique piece and part 3 is a border around the applique. Yes, it's an adaptation of an old baby quilt. It finishes at 40" x 40"---disclaimer: the dates and the position of the leaves are subject to change.

And one more item for this post: For those of you who enjoyed doing the Concentric Square table topper for the holidays, we're re-kitting it for Spring. Yes, we actually have lovely spring colors in all this reproduction fabric. We'll be getting more books in for those of you who missed it the first time:

Happy Sunday to all! The sun outside is very deceiving it is COLD! but very pretty the trees are just glistening in the sun. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. The above poem is one of my favorites some days are really hard to get through but we are blessed to know the next will be better. And today is a better day.

I finally got to work at the shop some this week, and you guys------ we have some awesome stuff planned for the coming year. Linda W and Linda have been working hard and have some neat samples done and the kits are in the process of being done. You have gotten a glimpse here, but in person AWESOME!

We are starting a block of the month on Jan 29 at 10 am. Great quilt for spring. Above is a pic of the book, sorry I dont't have a good pic of the quilt itself it is applique with bunnies, carrots and flowers how springy is that?

Happy Ventine's Day from the Old Maid

It's finally done!! I got the last of the quilting done and the binding put on and it's at the shop as we speak. Mel has the template patterns, graphs and instructions and it's ready to go- as soon as they get it all printed up. What am I talking about?

This is a reproduction of a small valentine quilt from the 1850's. We're doing research into the Phoenix Factory, but as yet have found nothing. There is a small inscription under the heart to "Squire Baldwine" from "Old Mail". Too sweet for words. The kit will be available on a limited basis and when it's gone it's gone and there is no separate pattern available. Get 'em while they're hot! There are directions for working with waste canvas in one of the earlier posts. Easy peasie.

Isn't it wonderful!. Christmas has passed the new year is on the way, and there is snow on the ground!
Well it will be here until the weekend apparently. I hope you all had a super Christmas. We all did. I am looking forward to the new year with great expectations. I have been working on a new civil war quilt that will be a block of the month. It is nice to put the fabric under the needle and create something beautiful. I am sure that when the original was made that the maker got just as much pleasure out of it. Till next time!

We wanted to just take a few minutes to reflect and say "Thank You" to all of our loyal customers. We like to think of ourselves as the modern day general store, where people come to visit, shop and exchange ideas. Our customers have inspired us this past year, as always! As with any small business it seems to always be an uphill battle to keep it going and make it interesting. We have many wonderful customers that keep life interesting and fresh. Many friendships have been birthed as a result of this business and we will always be grateful. The coming year will have more of the same, great new classes, new products and a place to come relax and hang out with friends who all share the passion of recreating the past.

I did manage to get a picture of the log cabin we did up for the holidays:

Perhaps not the best picture, but it really is a yummy quilt. Linda even tied it like the original so the ties all ball up into little pom poms after it's washed. And it did go together quickly! And at last check there were a couple of kits left.

Just a side note here. I know I've teased you guys with a valentine project, but JoAnn's has valentine AND EASTER stuff out already. Really. I still have to mix up my cookie dough and wrap everything for this holiday!

valentines in the air and the Christmas tree is still up

Yes, we're pulling fabric for a valentine project:

And you say, what can it be? To which I respond: You'll have to wait til January--but it's quick and so cute and un-seasonal, but it works.

Remember I told you I'd have pictures of the new, annual red and green quilt we're doing? Well, I remembered. Yeah, it surprised me, too.There are still a few kits left, and that's the only way to get the pattern.

We also have a few of the pointsettia kits left. These come in 2 color options. If you get one for Christmas this year, you could start it Christmas day and have it ready next year!

Cindy's sending out an email soon with the holiday hours listed. Be sure your loved ones are aware we're closing at noon on Christmas Eve day.

We'll be starting our annual Red and Green quilt # 2, in a limited edition (a three parter this year--and starting early) in late January or early February. So, check back often. merry, merry & happy, happy!

After typing in the title, I thought, that's what all this quilting is, isn't it. So much for profound.
Three weeks of BAD alllergies, 5 weeks of a BAD cold and a week of sick dog, but I managed to get a few things done in the fog. Some things I just don't remember.
We're working on a "few" special things for the new year: yearly seasonal quilts, projects for the Spring Fling, the shop hop and already we're planning for next year's Christmas celebration and our Open Houses!
We want to do a yearly Red and Green Quilt. Great for the holidays, sure, but gorgeous all year 'round.
We're starting with the red and green 4 square applique table topper we have now. There are a limited number of those kits left in the shop, so get them while you can. Did I say these would be limited editions? I'll have a picture on Thursday for sure.

Here is a sneak peek at the Valentine project:

See the cross stitch? If you haven't used waste canvas before, here's a great opportunity to try it. Baste your waste canvas to where you want to do your cross stitching. Cross stitch your chart, just as you would for any even weave fabric. Then... remove the waste canvas. How? I have pictures!!

Take the fabric to the sink and get the canvas good and wet with cold water to wash out the sizing in the waste canvas.

Pull out the threads from the smallest distance: here it's the horizontal threads. You can use your fingers or tweezers.

When all the horizontal threads are out, it's time for the rest.

Press from the wrong side on a padded surface, and you're ready to go. Easy peasy.

As soon as I have the quilting done, I'll post a picture of the whole thing. It's a reproduction of an old valentine. Fun!

Christmas Open House preview

I know this is late getting out, but I've had a nasty cold, like most of the rest of the population, but I can see through the fog now. Anyway, this Friday and Saturday, Nov 5 & 6, is our Christmas Holiday Open House. This is a teaser for one of the new projects we've been working on. It's a true group project. And my computer keeps saying that there's an error on the page, so I can't down load any pix right now. But, imagine this.....................
                                          Blue-a nice powder wedgewood blue------
                                          Green- a nice light pine--it makes you smell the needles
                                           Red-a good candy-cane red-pepperminty
                                           Black--nice and rich--a snowman's coal nose?
                                           Cream-the smooth kind that's in a nice caramel latte................
                               Little snips of orange, beige, brown scattered here and there.
                                                 Our version of Christmas, that's useable year round. (Makes ya want to come see it doesn't it?)   And other smaller projects, too! Kits are cut, but come early.

We also have a BIG shipment of Jo Morton fabric that Cindy's been waiting for--all the back orders came in at once!!!

Tom Hindes will be here on Sat., the 6th. He carves Noah's Arks, pins and other gift items. We all want something unique, and he's got it.

We've been trying to get Cindy to model the long red Christmas stockings, but she just won't cooperate.

And we'll have munchies you can try, and even buy some to take home and help you get in the holiday mood. It is November already, people. It's now or never to get started! We'll have pix in next week to show you what you missed. So if you don't want to say, "Oh, I missed it!" , get in here tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday from 10-5 (yes, we're open this Saturday til 5!!) so you can be part of the news, instead of just reading it.

It's October the WHAT??!!??!!

Yes, October 11. A little over 2 months to Christmas and less than a month to our Christmas Open House. We've been busy planning new projects that you'll still have time to do before the holiday. If we can get it done, so can you. Sneak preview:

No, it's not quilted yet, so looks lumpy, but check back in about a week! There's enough fabric in the kit to make candle mats to go with this table topper. It says Christmas without saying "Only at Christmas, you fool." I love things that do double duty.

I've even started thinking ahead to Valentine's Day. And I'm a terrible procrastinator. So I must be excited about something.

We got Jo Morton's latest in, and it's scrumptuous. Stop by and check stuff out. Or at least start making a list to make sure you don't forget anything when you come to the open house. Stay tuned for when there will be a free demo for Inklingo!

Welcome Fall

Do we not live in the most beautiful place in the fall? Today is 10/10/10 ! Wow! It is a ten of a day for sure. The leaves are just gorgeous and the sun is unbelievable. Fall is by favorite season. I have always loved the way the colors of fall play together. As a quilter it is a good season to take a look at the colors of nature and see how all colors looks good together. Some times we get so hung up in the the picking of fabrics we forget this is supposed to be fun. Here at the shop we are all busy sewing up new and exciting things for our annual Christmas Open House,"A Homestead Christmas" is our theme this year and we will be hosting our celebration on the first weekend of November. We are excited to share our finds with you.
Melanie's daughter, Abagail, was the junior attendant for the River Valley homecoming this year. Jacquline, Cindy's daughter started at Ohio State so did Melanie's son Heath. It has been a busy fall. Linda's husband Jerry has had some medical issues so she has been very busy with him. Hopefully he is on the road to recovery! Sometimes we just need to take some time for ourselves, stitch a little, read a little or just sit in the sunshine and revel in what we are blessed to have!

See the lovely new button to your right? Yes, the one that says "Inklingo". If you've never gone there before, let me tell you, it's a whole new world that will make your quilting world so much easier and stress free. What do most of us like least about quilting? For me, it's the templates, the marking, worrying if all of the marks are the same, planning the placement on the fabric for the most efficient and economical use of the fabric, and knowing I'll probably blow one or more of these issues. No more. And this isn't just for hand piecing. It makes machine piecing so much more accurate, too. You can still use your rotary cutter for efficient cutting. You can make the most perfect HST ever, without any drawing, tape or paper. And things come out so beautifully!

When you first look at the web site, it seems to be a little overwhelming--at least it did to me. Take it step by step. First, check out the freebies. You even get to try it out free before you buy anything! And Linda Franz is a peach! She and her group of addicted Inklingologists are always ready to help. After you check out the freebies, join the yahoo group. Check out the photos. Get inspired. Then go to the website and check out the "Support and Goodies" list. There is a ton of information there. Then, come see US--well, right now, specifically, the other Linda, on a Wed. or call on a Wed and I'll try to answer your questions. I've been using Inklingo for about 6 months now, and have absolutely gorgeous points!

I'm doing projects that I would never have considered before as too daunting.

We'll be having some demos soon. If there are any specific times that are better for you, let us know and we'll try to arrange something for you. I'll have some samples at the shop this Wednesday, and will leave them there, so you can check them out. Would you believe a Pickle Dish Clamshell pattern?

No, we're not using it to the exclusion of all the other methods you've come to depend on from us. It's just one more way to do things, and it works for some of us.

I'll show you some pictures of the Fall Open House as soon as Cindy emails them over to me. We all had a great time! If you didn't get a chance to come, check out my finds and plan on coming to the Christmas Open House in November.
First, you missed the donut holes and the cider. yumm.

Then you missed the Spoonman and his wife, the Spoonman's Wife. From her I purchased Abigail. Is she not the best!!?! And she's sitting on the wonderful rocker that I snagged from the Caning Man.
I also got a wooden eating spoon and a PB&J "spoon" from the Spoonman.
We've started to work on a special repro for the Christmas Open House, but you'll have to check back later to see what's up!

Our shop is now decorated and packed full of great new Fall items that will accessorize your period American Home!

This year's featured craftsmen will be Tom and Stephanie Metz. Tom is known as "The Spoon Maker". He carves in the 18th century style, creating useable kitchen utensils out of cherry wood. Stephanie crafts primitive one-of-a-kind dolls. Both will be at our shop on Saturday, Sept. 11th dressed in period attire and demonstrating and selling their wares.

Allen Rasey, a local craftsman of chair caning, will be demonstrating his craft on Friday, Sept. 10th from 10am to 2pm during our Fall Festival. Come see this amazing art being performed!

There will be several quilts displayed that we have recreated from antique quilts. The "Old Glory" quilt by Yellow Creek will be at our shop during the month of September. Good Wives Co will be recreating this quilt and featuring it as a block of the month.

I've been a bit under the weather for the past week or so, and have been quiet. But not totally non-productive! As proof, I give you the Black Eyed Susans Table Runner.

And if that's not enough, I give you:

lots of stars for the stars and bars quilt in the Comfort Inn book. Unfortunately, not enough stars. I need something like 160. I have all the background blocks cut, but need to mark and cut some more stars. Yes, I have lost my mind--I mean what was I thinking? Well, that assumes I was thinking, now, doesn't it? But I'm having fun and it's do-able. I just can't think about all the ones I have to do yet. But for this one there's no deadline.

I didn't make it into the shop last week, so I can't wait for Wednesday! It's like Christmas without the bills. I'm sure there's all kinds of decorating going on for the Open House. I'll post a few on Thursday to whet your appetites!

Yes, I'm still doing hexagons! And I'm making progress! All the flowers are done, just have to add 7 more and the top and side fill-ins. And I'm lovin' it. We ran out of stamps, but have more ordered and I should be bringing them in next Wednesday. In the mean time, I encourage you to check out www.Inklingo.com . Linda Franz has developed a method for printing cutting and sewing lines directly onto your fabric. There's a video on you tube that shows all about hexagons and she's got a free hexagon design book for download on her site. www.lindafranz.com/blog . Spend some time there and you'll be amazed.

We do have the patterns for the apron all done. Cindy was good enough to model for us! You can wear them either direction. And they're incredibly comfortable. Now for the big news!! We're getting ready for the Fall Open House! This year it is being held on September 10 & 11. Special guests on Saturday the 11th is The Spoon Man and his wife . The Spoon Man hand carves 18th century wooden spoons out of cherry. Beautiful and useful. His wife makes 18th century dolls and their clothes. Both will be demonstrating their art and selling their wares. If you want to see a picture of them, go to any roadside rest stop and check out the Ohio map--they're listed as special attractions for the state. Watch for the newsletter in your email for all the particulars for both days. If we don't have your email, drop in or call the shop and get added so you don't miss out on all the news and specials.

We got some homespuns in on Wednesday--wonderful stripes: blacks, reds and a mustard. One of the reds is absolutely perfect for Christmas!

Hasn't Laura done a wonderful job tweaking the blog look? Red is such a yummy color! And she's so much better posting photos than I am, so we'll leave the important ones to her.

Linda's apron pattern is awesome. The last of Settlers Pride has arrived and is ready to pick up. Keep an eye on your e-mail for news on classes and dates for the fall and holiday open houses. Oh as if you don't have enough books we have received Maggie Bonanomi's new book"Comfort Zone it is AWESOME . A wool lovers dream! I can't focus. There, I've said it. Any new project that I see, think about, might think about, never gave a second thought to til now.....all distracting. And tempting. And I succumb. When I finished that table

topper, I knew I had to keep making more hexagons. So, I started a table runner. I got maybe 20% done with that and I said, maybe a little pincushion would be fun. The pincushion is almost done, I'm dying to get back to the table runner, but last Wednesday at the shop I started pulling fabrics for a star applique quilt from the new Blackbird Designs book, Country Inn. These hexagons with the rubber stamp are sooo easy and accurate. Things lay perfectly flat! Check this out:

If you haven't used the rubber stamps before, nothing could be easier. First, there's just the stamp, the ink pad and the fabric. Stamp on the wrong side of the fabric, cut on the cutting lines (a good thing to do in front of the TV when you have to keep "Mr. Wonderful" company. Then, when you're ready, just sew on the sewing lines. They're all exactly the same, no need to think about it. You can even "chain piece" if you'd like": sew a seam, don't cut, turn the fabric, sew the next seam. I fan the seam allowances out at the intersections to decrease the bulk for quilting. Yes, we've got these in the shop and they're ready to go. Beware. They're contagious.

Well, I guess I better get back to actually sewing. I need to make more progress if I'm thinking of getting that fabric this week when I go into the shop! (Blinders, I need blinders.)

hexagon crazy

Yes, yes, yes, I've gone hexagon crazy! I finished up this wonderful table topper that the other over-worked people at the shop had started, and I'm hooked! I got a rubber stamp made, and it worked so well, we now have them available at the shop for everybody else, too. This topper is available as a kit, or you could use your own ideas. I'm now in the process of working on a fall table runner. (I said I was hooked, didn't I?)

Well, the shop is clean and full of fabric, patterns, books, kits and bundles waiting for all the Central Ohio Shop Hoppers! If you don't have your passport yet, it's not too late. Just pop into one of the participating shop hop stores, buy your passport and you're eligible for all the wonderful specials the shops are offering.

Our special is 20% off all kits and bundles! We've got lots of kits, both quick and easy and intricate and absorbing. There are even a few at 30% off.

We're working to get our primitive apron pattern here, and there is a new stamp for 1" hexagons coming soon. We'll let all of you people who loved the apple core stamp know as soon as it comes in.

By the way, I'm Linda Wolfe and I'll be in on Wednesdays helping out here and there. I've been quilting since about '76 and have made tons of mistakes, so I can hopefully help you avoid making the same ones. We'll all be posting things now and we'll try and keep you well informed about all the things you need (either physically or emotionally). We hope you'll stop by often and share a smile.

Snow Snow GO Away

I know I am no the only one that wishes the snow would give itself a rest! Many of you have missed the biggest sale of the year. We think that with the economy the way it is,(even though the President says it is getting better?????) we all need every break we can get so guess what WE HAVE EXTENDED THE SALE THROUGH NEXT SAT!! How cool is that 35% off of most of the stre. Some exclusions. And we respectfully request that you purchase at least one yard minimum cuts of fabrics. A news letter finally!

Just want to let you know that we are finally getting the newsletter sent to the publisher. Please make sure we have your e-mail address, as this will be the way are newsletters are sent now. It will also be published on the web site. We have some amazing classes scheduled. We are all doing well, Linda had some cataract surgery done and now she sees things in a whole new way. Brandon is still trying to go home with someone. LOL He is such a character and always keeps us on our toes. Cindy and Mel both have seniors at River Valley so they both have graduation on the brain, but have both been sewing alot. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new grand baby, she is due March 5 but bless her heart she looks like she is going to pop. We will get to see the baby next week, as they are going to do another ultra sound. I can't believe how technology has changed in my lifetime. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our annual Super Bolt Sale Feb.2 thru Feb. 13 Don't let this one get by you, it is the biggest of the year. 35% store wide with some exclusions We also will be having a trunk show from Country Threads and The City Stitcher, see you next week Laura

Holiday Fest

Wow, What a weekend! We had such good response to the first holiday event that "Quilt Spree" has hosted. There were all ten shops represented, and each gave a wonderful demo on a quick holiday gift idea. Everything from birds, purses and table runners to items of convenience to make your projects easier to do. I will post a couple of pics of our retail booth. We took a mini shop with us, but packing it up to come home felt more like we took the whole shop! Each shop had their own area to sell their wares, and boy did we sell! Yea! Now we can order new stuff, are we addicted or what. Oh well it's not illegal or immoral!!! Now for the BIG news. All off the bolt yardage will be, are you ready........ 30% off from Dec. 8 thru Dec.24 2009! Merry Christmas! There will be 1 yard minimum cuts. No holds.We will be closing on Dec. 24 and reopening on Jan. 5 2010 regular hours. Now is that exciting news or what! have a good week. Laura

The weather outside is frightful! Well not really just dreary. Now is a great time to sew, so get busy! I have been working on our demo for Holiday Fest it is this Sat. at the Holiday in in Worthington Ohio. We have been stacking and packing all week and are anxious to get there and have some fun. We will have a vendors table with lots of kits and pattern. I hope you are all planning to join us. We have lots of Christmas in the store. Now at my house, not so much. We plan to go to the tree farm on Sunday and pick the biggest one we can get in the truck, then watch out the holidays will have officially started! I hope you all take time to enjoy this season and remember the reason we celebrate! Laura

Well after so many of you said that I needed to keep this blog thing going, I guess I better get busy. This past weekend was a blast at Good Wives we had our annual Holiday Open House. We are so grateful for our loyal customers who travel long distance to visit us. We have many things displayed for the up coming Christmas Holiday. We concentrated on having a homespun Christmas this year using homemade ornaments and using nature to guide the way. If you missed the open house please stop in soon to see whats happening.
The upcoming year is going to be an exciting one for us at Good Wives. We have joined "Quilt Spree" which started out as the Central Ohio Shop Hop and has since been renamed and revamped. Our first event with them will be Dec. 5 at the Holiday Inn in Worthington Ohio. This will be a very eventful day as all the shops will be demonstrating a new idea to each and every attendee. Get all the info at www.myquiltspree.com We are going to go on the 4th of December and spend the night. This will be a good time for all of us to unwind and enjoy sewing with our friends.
We also will be starting several new Block of the Months the first of the year. The one I am most excited about is the The Civil War Tribute Quilt. This quilt was designed by the talented girls at Homestead Hearth using a beautiful collection of fabric designed by Judie Rothermel. It is an awesome quilt to commemorate the 150 Anniversary of the Civil War in 2011. The quilt is 110" x112" so this is no little quilt. Stop by the shop for more info. Also we will be doing the wool quilt "Settlers Pride. This quilt is in the shop now but will have to go on to the next location on Wed. of this week so hurry in on Tue to check it out, it is gorgeous.
We are currently working on the class schedule for Jan.- June so let us know if you are looking for something in particular.
I will add some pics of the open house but please stop by and let us show you what we have coming up.

Where did June GO?

Hello everyone, I am so sorry that it has been so long. Sometimes life just takes over and before you know it, a month is gone out of your life. As many of you know my sister in law Kelly Clever died in June she was 44 years old and suffered her whole life with muscular dystrophy. My life's believes where changed by her existence. She always had a kind word and thought that life was a gift no matter how damaged the package was. We all could learn a lesson from her. I will continue to miss her greatly.. On a brighter note... The surgery on my hand went well and I am proudly typing this with one hand Not bad huh!!!Eight more weeks and we will see if I can still sew YEA. The store has been busy redecorating the shop for the summer and planning what will be happening this fall, there will be some surprises! New fabric has arrived from Jo Morton and some new things from Moda, Pictures shown. I will try my best to keep you better informed. Thanks for understanding.

We have spent the last couple of days cutting more kits for "Dear Jane" we have so many people doing this wonderful quilt that I am having a time keeping up. Our great friend and helper bee Jean was busy all day with her rotary cutter. I don't know what we would do without her. Thanks Jean!
We purchased some really nice patterns at market. Renee Plains has some of the cutest things,Rose Garden,Little Blue Birds, and a Crazy Patch Purse.
We received new books Jo Morton "Vintage Journey",Kim Deih "Simple Comforts", Joined at the Hip "Folk Art Favorites"

We Are Back From Market

Well we survived the Spring Quilt Market in Pittsburgh! We had such a wonderful day. There were so many new things to see we had a hard time keeping up.We even stopped for supper on the way home at a wonderful Italian place that had been featured on Food Networks show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." I will let you know later the actual name of it, my memory is fading with age. The food was wonderful and the lady that owns it "Rose" was just delightful she is 79 and works every day. I hope I am as fortunate!
We purchased some new patterns from Clothesline Quilts and will have all 12 of their Civil War Battle Series quilts hanging for our Fall Open House in September they are beautiful designs that look really complicated but are easy to make! Right up my alley!
Jo Morton has a new book"Vintage Journey". There is the cutest table runner in the book using Cindy Blackbergs apple core rubber stamp. We should have our hands on the book this coming week and are ordering the rubber stamp for the templates this week. Jo also has several new lines of fabrics coming , needless tho say we ordered them all!
We have a few autographed copies of Primitive Gatherings new book "Autumn Gatherings" in the shop for sale, and more on order. This is one of the best books I have seen is a long time. Fall projects are my favorite to make, so I brought home the fabrics to make a small quilt called "Turkey Tracks" from Autumn Gatherings with any luck I will put it together this weekend. Blackberry Primitives had Maggie Bonanomi design a stunning wool quilt called "SettlersPride". For those of you not familiar with Maggies designs you have been missing the boat. She is a true artist and designs the most beautiful things. We will be doing this quilt as a block of the month starting this fall. Watch here and your newsletter for more details.
Our kitty "Delilah" says thank for all your prayers, she is feeling much better, but still does not like taking her medicine.

Off to Market We Go

Well Spring Market is here already. We will be visiting quilt market in Pittsburgh on Friday, so make sure to keep checking the store to see what new goodies we found to share with our customers.
We have been cutting kits like little mad women! We are all completely taken with "Remembering Adelia" so we have kitted several of the small quilts in the book. Including Orange Peel $35.50, Peony Star $57.50, Civil War Basket $24.50, and Applique Basket $18.50. We also have kitted Trick of Treat $175.00, this quilt is from Blackbird Designs book "When the Cold Wind Blows".
Kits seem to be one of customers favorites and we will be glad to accommodate your requests if we are able.
Everyone here at the shop is doing well, our kitty "Delilah" has not been feeling well but she is now on the mend. Cindy and Mels children are preparing for prom and summer events. Linda has been concentrating on her flower garden and keeping up with Teena on her hexagon blocks. Mel has finished her "Orange Peel" from Remembering Adelia , she hand appliqued the top and then hand pieced the top together and is now hand quilting it. She has been working like a house a fire. I have been sewing a little, concentrating on kits. I will be having hand surgery in June so I am trying to get all the kits and such caught up before then, so stop in and show us what you are working on. We get our inspiration from all of you our customers.

Welcome to our new blog

Good Morning to all, well it seems the rain is gone for a few days and the sun is out! The spring flowers should be popping up everywhere. Here at Good Wives we are excited about all the projects we are working on and of course the ones we want to start.

Linda is still working on her reproduction hexagon quilt along with her baskets from "When the Cold Wind Blows"and I better not forget "Dear Jane". Cindy just finished a beautiful "Fit to Frame" by Lori Smith and she is starting on Autumn Thistle from "When the Cold Wind Blows". Melanie has been busy with her baskets for Trick or Treat and now has gotten addicted to needle turn so she started on one of the small quilts from"Remembering Adelia". I have been working on Love Letters, Dear Jane, and Trick or Treat. I would love to just get one of them done!

Now that I have shared what we are working on I will tell you about some of the new things that have arrived lately. We were all excited to see the new Cinnamon and Spice and Seneca Shirtings from Jo Morton. They are wonderful, as usual! We have already had to reorder the entire line of shirtings . We just received "Elm Creek Quilts Sylvias Bridal Quilt", this week, it is wonderful it would make a great block of the month,mmmm. We are also taking pre-orders on "Simple Comforts" by Kim Diehl and "Folk Art Fun" by Joined at the Hip. If you would like one of these books just call the shop at 1-740-389-5555.
